China Claims U.S. is Falsely Creating Volt Typhoon to Conceal Its Own Hacking Activities

China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center (CVERC) is adamant that the Volt Typhoon is a fabrication orchestrated by the U.S. and its allies.

In collaboration with the National Engineering Laboratory for Computer Virus Prevention Technology, the agency has accused the U.S. federal government, intelligence agencies, and Five Eyes countries of engaging in cyber espionage against China, France, Germany, Japan, and global internet users.

They claim to have “ironclad evidence” proving that the U.S. conducts false flag operations to cover up its own cyber attacks and maintains a large-scale global internet surveillance network under the guise of countering Chinese cyber threats.

The CVERC states, “The U.S. federal government’s actions regarding Volt Typhoon are a political farce aimed at discrediting China.”

The agency refutes claims that the U.S. military base in Guam was a victim of Volt Typhoon cyber attacks, asserting that it was, in fact, the perpetrator of cyber incidents targeting China and Southeast Asian countries.

Previous reports from CVERC have labeled Volt Typhoon as misinformation spread by U.S. intelligence agencies.

Volt Typhoon is a China-linked cyber espionage group that embeds itself into critical infrastructure by compromising edge devices like routers and firewalls to remain undetected.

In a recent incident, Volt Typhoon exploited a security flaw in Versa Director to carry out malicious activities.

Chinese authorities have highlighted the use of edge devices by threat actors originating from China to conduct cyber operations while evading detection.

The report also accuses the U.S. of deploying a toolkit named Marble to obfuscate attribution efforts and mislead investigators by inserting strings in various languages.

Furthermore, the U.S. is criticized for its control over fiber optic cables and alleged indiscriminate monitoring of internet users globally.

The report concludes by calling for international collaboration in cybersecurity and the development of better products and services to combat cyber threats.
