The Indian government announced the successful rescue and repatriation of around 250 Indian citizens in Cambodia who were victims of cyber scams.
These individuals were promised job opportunities in Cambodia but were forced to engage in illegal cyber activities, according to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The government has rescued 75 people within the last three months.
In collaboration with Cambodian authorities and Indian agencies, efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible for orchestrating these fraudulent schemes.
Recent reports revealed that over 5,000 Indians in Cambodia were being exploited for cyber fraud by criminal organizations, posing as law enforcement officials to extort money from victims in India.
Similar operations in China and the Philippines have liberated numerous individuals forced into criminal activities, such as pig butchering scams orchestrated by organized crime syndicates.
Chainalysis reported significant inflows of cryptocurrency linked to these criminal activities, highlighting the scale of the problem and the urgent need for intervention.
Additionally, threat actors have been leveraging vulnerabilities in Ethereum to access funds illicitly, bypassing security protocols and engaging in fraudulent activities.
